Warm, breathable, high-loft fleece that's lightweight, the R2 Jacket is compressible, and provides superior warmth and insulation under a shell jacket for alpine ascents.

"This is my favorite mid layer - period. I have a number of R1 pullovers which during the winter only come off for laundering - lucky I have several. The R2 jacket fits better and is warmer. It's not coming off until the weather warms up! Nothing beats the insulation, fit or the ability to breathe of the R2 fleece. I'm 5'8", 155 lbs and the medium is a perfect fit."

Good all-rounder

"I have used the R2 a lot as a layer under the Stretch Ascent jacket on cold alpine starts in NZ and its silm fit means i never got the awkward bulkiness that happens so often with fleece. This is the first mid-weight fleece layer I've had that is truly cut well and works great under a shell. And it's good on its own rock climbing in the cold - again, the slim fit means you get a clean line-of-sight to your harness and rack..."

Absolute Comfort

"Imagine something you never want to take off because it's so soft, warm and comfortable.............That's basically the R4 Jacket in a nutshell. When I first bought the R4 Jacket I could not see the point in owning any other "R" jackets. I thought they would be just thinner versions of the R4 jacket. That is true to some degree regarding the warmth and bulk factor. But each jacket is constructed differently and I have found the R2 to be the perfect all around, wear anywhere (including sleeping in it.......) jacket. Great look, great feel, great warmth, great everything about this jacket. Really a pleasant surprise from a company that already makes great products. The employee at the store said that this jacket was a Patagoinia "classic". Now I can understand why everyone loves this jacket. This jacket is a MUST HAVE for any Patagonia fanatic like me !"

great layering piece

"Ideal layer under a ski jacket or shell. Fit is perfect- athletic cut, non-bulky. Seems cut according to traditional Patagonia sizing. Unrestrictive and light material. Fleece is very soft and stretches. Reason for 4 stars: Seems material could be a bit denser. If Pat. could blend the material of the earlier R2 versions with the softness and stretchiness of this version, then the R2 would be 5-star perfect."

Regulator rules
5

"I've been a fan of Regulator fleece for at least nine years, especially R2. It a surprisingly effective insulator, given the weight, it allows air exchange, and it packs easily. I've used an R2 pullover for cycle commuting all year around, perhaps adding a light shell if the morning temperature is lower than 40 degrees. I've found the fabric to be very durable; in fact, I just retired one pullover that I've used nearly every day since 2001.
I've used this jacket a few times, and expect to get many years of regular use. The construction is robust, and the zippers work well.
I think that earlier reviewers have also noted this: the R2 fleece is best used when active. If you will be standing around in cool weather, I'd recommend a wool garment, or heavier fleece."

Fleece as it should be

"This is the fleece jacket as insulation, honed to a minimalist perfection. The fabric is soft, packable, warm. The cut is close but plenty of sleeve length and a good torso fit. A Large fits me, surprising because in the R1 Flash a Large fits my torso like a condom. In this jacket Large is snug but comfortable. Go figure. Anyway, the pockets are well-placed, and seem to work well. The weight is low for this type of jacket. Nothing interferes with moisture movement and fast drying. I like this a lot!"

Remember what it's for

"I see plenty of reviews complaining about the lack of wind protection, but that's not what this is for. It's a fantastic layering piece that provides insulation under a shell on wet, cold days while being a great outer layer if your pushing hard outdoors. And for someone who gets warm very fast, it keeps me from getting too warm when I've got a pack on. The lack of a windproof barrier means that it breathes extremely well and dries fast if it does get wet. Unlike heavier fleeces, it also compresses fairly small when you need to stuff it in a pack or a school bag. I usually layer with a wool 3 top, which works well unless it's particularly windy, in which case a shell like a Spraymaster or Ready Mix slides right on and I can keep going all day. In terms of looks, the Pirate Blue color matches my Arc Theta SV, and the muppet skin look is classic."

I suggest a new strategy, R2

"Quoted from Star Wars, but this jacket's the best I've seen since 1977.
Coming in a slim fit, it's not going to give you a lot of room underneath, maybe a Wool or Cap 1. That's just FYI, not a ding.
An R2 warms you as you work, it's not going to be like a fleece blanket on a couch. You ski, jog, bike, then it's going to work with you quite well. I find it particularly useful under a Reconnaissance ski jacket for skiing, or under a Kallispell for a bike ride into the city.
It's plenty soft, and mixes the R1 fabric in for comfort and lowering the weight quite nicely. About the same length as a micro puff vest, which pairs well with it, btw."

excellent gear, excellent service!

"I purchased my Patagonia R2 in 2007. It is the most perfect mid-weight/light fleece I have ever worn. The compressibility along with its perfect fit makes it a must for any outdoor activity where the temperature drops between 50 degrees F and 30 degrees F. It dries fast and while wet still helps maintain body heat. However, this jacket does not "break wind” You should check out the wind shield jacket as a wind breaker and wear it over your R2. Personally, I have my R2 dry-cleaned, but I believe it’s washable. Speaking of the dry-cleaners, there was an incident which occurred at the dry-cleaners that increased my love and loyalty to Patagonia as a company. The jacket was cleaned, but the bottom of the zipper was torn off and the actual zipper pull mechanism was missing. The dry-cleaners refused to pay for the jacket but offered to fix it. I said no, I don't need a cheap zipper on my favorite fleece. So, I sent it to Patagonia. 4 weeks later (the repairs were on backorder) I received my jacket back. Lo and behold, it was a brand new R2 fleece. I called and asked what happened and the very kind customer service representative stated the zipper was not able to be replaced so they went ahead and just sent me a brand new jacket...for free! I kindly said thank you and reminded the rep. that Patagonia's company and products are second to none! Thank you Patagonia for your products and service and please continue to make the "R" fleece line!"

Amazing insulating layer!

"I was heli-riding in British Columbia. On a traverse, I fell backwards into a small stream. I kept my head out of the water using my elbow! It was quite a sight. Eventually, when I realized nobody would be able to help me too easily (or to take an embarrassing picture), I stuck my hand in the water so that I could reach up with the other hand and un-clip my snowboard. In doing this, I submerged my arm up to my elbow in the very cold water. My glove and forearm were soaked through. I had a Wool 4 layer under my R2 under my H2no jacket. Well, this review is long enough ... That was the 2nd run of the day and I did NOT go in (I stayed out for another 12 runs). And I did NOT get cold! This stuff is amazing."

Great for Not Doing Anything

"I don't hike. I don't live anywhere around snow. I don't run my huskies in -30 degree weather, or get dropped from choppers to snowboard. I saw a Warren Miller film once. It was cool.
What I do is walk from my apartment courtyard to my 4WD truck that never gets the 4WD engaged. I play Xbox on my couch. I also walk from my truck into work where I sit in a cold computer room. This jacket is totally awesome for all those activities.
I have a much thicker jacket that I usually wore before I bought got the R2. This one is more effective, and it says Patagonia on it so people might actually think I'm active."

A masterpiece

"A truly beautiful jacket. It works miracles underneath a shell in the winter, it's perfect by itself on a brisk summer morning and often serves me as a casual sweater worn over a button up shirt. It's versatility makes it number #1 on my list of Patagonia Must Owns. I literally wear it 12 months a year, which is a testament to it's uncanny durability (with the exception of a U shaped hole torn out of the back, thanks to my dog). I put this thing through the ringer daily and it's quality is still like the day I bought it. Well done Pat, well done."

"At first glance you might not get this jacket. It looks thin and light. The real beauty is how it heats up when you are active. If you are looking for a fleece for sitting around doing nothing – this isn't the one (try the R3, R4 or Retro-X). The R2 is so warm and breathable. In fact the only thing you might say is it can be too warm. I wore my R2 (I have 2) for 3 days in the Adirondacks for hiking and sports; where it was 40 degrees by day and 25 at night with just a capilene 2 crew underneath and was nice and warm."

Light and Breathable

"I bought this fleece as a midlayer to go under a shell and it has fit this role perfectly. It is lightweight which means it doesn't have any windproofing but its going under a shell so that doesn't matter. It also has a lot of of loft for a fleece so it insulates better than expected of such a light garment. All in all a solid performer."

"I bought the small in this men's jacket (typically I am a medium in the slim fit women's sizes) and I love it I came back for another color. I was hiking in the rocky mountains last weekend and it kept me very warm without being bulky. Highly recommend it."

"I have used this jacket under my Guide Jacket for extra warmth and also as a stand alone jacket to take the chill off cool nights. It is very comfortable and soft. The sleeve cuffs are awesome for comfort while not constricting yet keep the sleeves in place while putting something over it. The pockets hold things without the chance of even the smallest thing falling out. I love this jacket!"
