My Favorite Jacket

"If I have to pick one jacket to have it would be the R4, it is almost as warm as my down sweater but when I am hiking in the R4 and start to overheat I open up the pockets and I start to cool down. The R4 is well constructed and is bombproof. I have had this jacket for many years and it still looks like new. Mostly I have used it while I was in the Chagrin River staking for steelhead and always kept me warm."

"I wear this all the time! Being a photographer, I hike a lot and then stand a lot. This thing works great even when its windy. Combined with a down vest and you can shoot in any conditions! Its a lot of money, but if you can afford it, BUY IT."

Great jacket, great customer service!

"I purchased an R4 jacket three or four years ago. About a year ago, the stitching around one of the pockets started to come apart. I had never heard about Patagonia's warranty - when a friend told me about it, I thought it was too good to be true. Nonetheless, I shipped my jacket back to Patagonia with a nice note and 4-5 weeks later, Patagonia sent me a brand new replacement. I was shocked. Incredible jacket, great customer service - I couldn't be happier. I'll shop Patagonia (and wear the gear proudly) for the rest of my life."

Amazing Jacket

"I'm 5'11" - 145lbs and wear a size small.
Great jacket, fantastic warmth yet breathable. Durable, stylish, wind resistant and usable over a surprising large temperature range.
If I could have one custom made, I'd get a slimmer body and longer sleeves, but the standard cut is more than serviceable.
One of my favorite pieces of clothing."

"I commute on a bicycle and the R4 is a dream. I am able to wear only a t-shirt under it in weather as cold as 25 and it is darn right pleasant. My only complaint is the wrist cuffs...they are very loose and let air in - I have to wear my winter riding gloves loose to prevent this. Patagonia really needs to make better elastic cuffs for the R4 or put in a wind screen. -1 star b/c of the cuffs but I would still recommend it in a heartbeat. Overall an amazing jacket."

Very good - not quite perfect

"My wife bought me this last Christmas. I was initially disappointed in its warmth but found it excels in windy conditions down to the 30s or so, depending on one's metabolism, activity level, etc. I get compliments on it when I wear it. I sat in a cold deer blind in 25 or so degree weather the other day with the R4, a tech weight crew, and a grid fleece zip t on and was pretty comfortable.
I don't like the fact that it rides up when walking or when the arms are raised. Coming out of the washing machine it was MUCH wetter than a 200 weight Polartec jacket. The other jacket was virtually dry. The R4 was wet. It seems the windproof layer blocks some of the water from spinning off. The zipper seems to be a bit finicky. I've had it separate from the bottom a couple times and it catches a couple places near the chin. BUT, overall, I like it better than any other fleece jacket I own. And I'm kind of an outwear collector."

Good, but could be great

"This is a really good city jacket for cold climes, but it doesn't live up to the ad on the website. Warn over a regular shirt, this jacket is warm to about 35F. With a warm base layer like a capelene 3 it's good to just below freezing. Beyond that you have to add some serious layers to stay warm in real cold winter weather. It's also a jacket that is only warm if you are active. This isn't the type of garment that will keep you toasty if you are just sitting or standing around in the cold. That being said, it works surprisingly well in the wind and looks great. Zipper could be more heavy-duty though. I've worn it almost every day since I got it in November, except during a brutal -40 cold snap."

"This jacket is the best. I wore this jacket with only a long sleeve t-shirt on. The temp. was 20 degrees and snowing, with sustained 30mph winds and 60 mph gusts. The wind chills were 0 to sub 0. I never felt the wind or the cold. I was just wishing that my flap hat was made like the R4, because I thought my ears were going to freeze off. Very much worth every penny."

more sytle--than substance

"First off, as far as keeping you warm, this is the best fleece I have owned. The warmth/weight ratio is outstanding. Wind-blocking/shedding properties are well above average, without the typical stiff feeling due to laminates. But this isn't a technical fleece. So the fact that it light and compresses well is nice, but this would be my last choice for anything more than a light hike. This isn't something I would feel comfortable beating up.
For the price, they could have simply added more common sense features. The synch/draw cord is the same on previous regulator fleece's, and just doesn't work well when compared to other solutions. And the fine zipper is an accident waiting to happen. Plus there is no possible way you could negotiate that with medium/heavy gloves on.
And as mentioned in another review, the 'forge grey' (which is a great color), unfortunately appears forest green in anything other than natural light. As florescent lights are so common, this might as well be forest green...returning for a black, I guess.
The fundamentals of this fleece are outstanding. A heavy, wind-blocking fleece, in a light package. But it loses significant points for not really being anything more than a city jacket. And for $250, it might not be worth it. This is a fleece with more style, than substance."

Lame Main Zipper

"The fine tooth main zipper is not adequate. If you leave tension on the draw cord hem and do not pay strict attention when zipping up the jacket, teeth very easily become misaligned. Sent back my original purchase and Patagonia promptly replaced. The replacement did the same right out of the bag and will be going back. In terms of warmth and wind resistance - 5 stars."

My "go to"
5

"I love this jacket! I bought it last year at the end of the season sale because it was a great deal and I liked the color, never thinking that it would get much use. I'm a bit of a jacket junkie and have more jackets than should be allowed, yet this one is my go to. My closet is loaded with everything from Barbour to Loro Piana, yet for some reason I am always drawn to the R4 and it performs flawlessly. Perhaps because it's liking wrapping yourself in a snuggly blanket. In fact, I wore it yesterday when I went outside during our first snow storm. Kept me nice and toasty, and there was no need for me to break out a gore-tex shell. This jacket is a keeper in my book!"

Forge Gray Changes Colors

"Amazingly comfortable fleece. Only complaint is the forge gray turns into a forest green of sorts under fluorescent lights. Just a heads up, as I know I wanted a gray fleece and not green."

Light, Soft, Stylish, and Versatile

"This is my first Patagonia jacket, and I've been wearing it for seven months now. My wife bought the R4 for me in green. I have had so many admiring comments about this jacket and color. More importantly, it certainly lives up to its ability to keep the wind out and warmth in. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area where summer evenings can sometimes feel like winter. I've worn this jacket with a dress shirt to fine dining in the City, baseball games, and just around the house. When you need ventilation, open its high pockets. Works great. It's light, soft, stylish, and versatile. Bought my dad one. He took it on an Alaska cruise and loved the jacket too. This one is a winner!"

Want windproof and warmth, you've got it!

"I got a Lightweight R4 and a Marmot Windstopper fleece before I ever really thought about the R4. Funny thing was, both the other fleeces were windproof but not warm. More shells than jacket. The R4 has replaced both of them as an all around fleece for me. The R2 lining slides easily over underlayers or a sweatshirt, and feels nice against bare skin at the neck and the wrists. No seams along the shoulders means that wearing a pack over this is not a problem. Got my girlfriend one too, and she loves it.
My only issue is that with my build, 42 inch chest, 17.5 inch neck, the zipper sticks if I pull it all the way up and try to then pull it down. Really a function of bending the zipper track, and if I straighten it out, problem solved."

"This jacket could not be built any better. The warmest, most reliable, and still stylish jacket currently made. When it's windy, this jacket cuts it. When it's raining, this jacket remarkably holds its own. Did I mention this jacket is the only fleece you need for winter. I live in WI and have worn it with a cap t underneath during sub zero temps. Top Performance!!"

Great jacket but I wish it had an inside pocket.

"Great jacket but I wish it had pit zips and an inside pocket. I threw away my Denali (well almost) when I got this R4. It is way ahead of the Denali. The biggest reason is the wind block. Wind whipped through the Denali but this one lives up to the Patagonia quality and what it says it will do. The only draw backs are no pit zip and an inside pocket. At least the Denali had pit zips but it didn't have an inside pocket either. I don't understand why 'outdoor' companies make 'winter' jackets without big, water bottle size inside pockets. OR always has them, I guess someone from OR actually wears theirs places where their water bottle will freeze. Anyway a pet peeve but this jacket is a keeper."

"I live in Ga. I have tried most every combination for warmth/wind in a single layer. Denali...wind cuts through. Alchemy no wind, no warmth either. TNF redpoint. warm wind block no venting you just sweat. This R4 is it.It was a wind chill of around 20,real temp was 33 a couple of weeks ago as I was watching some rugby. just sitting and spectating for over 2 hours.no aerobic stuff .Only wore a cap 3 long sleeve. TOASTY AS EVER. No wind period! I have worn it in 58 and sunny watching games too. Just unzip the pockets even an inch or two and the R4 vents to perfection. My pockets hold heaps of stuff, without worry of lost items when venting. Bottom cinch is smooth and easy to adjust. Please don't waste your time with other gear. This will do in 3 seasons easy.I am 6', 248lbs. XL is roomy ,streches with good arm length. The staff at the Atlanta store are helpful w/out being pushy, and buzzing around you like a fly.Very courteous, and knowledgeable too. They stand behind everything they sell.JUST GET 1.........."
