"Bought this jacket during Patagonia sale; still trying to decide whether it is a keeper.
Pros: 1) Warm, warm, warm. R2 on the inside, 13.5 oz Polartec (nearly twice the weight of R2) on the outside, windblock membrane in-between. 2) Great color (in my case, White), with contrasting detail. 3) Good fit in shoulder and arm areas - I am 5'7", 125 lbs, and wear Patagonia size small. 4) Unlike some previous reviewers, I did not feel the jacket is bulky under arms, and found the longer sleeves accommodating.
Cons: 1) Torso is short and rides further up when arms are raised (would have appreciated at least 2 inches longer). 2) The jacket is really bulky around lower back area (even after layering it with R1 and fleece vest). 3) Drawcord cincher is inconveniently placed in the lower right of the back (hard to reach, could press into your body while sitting). 4) Placement of the chest pocket renders the pocket unusable under backpack straps. 5) Mesh-lined side pockets are not easy to access as vents if wearing a rain shell, and cannot be used to warm hands when its cold (pit zips instead, please!).
In sum, good materials and workmanship, but poor attention to technical detail."

"I got this jacket in bitter chocolate and white. In white I looked like a white bunny and will send it back. But the bitter chocolate is very beautiful. It is a comfortable fit and simple. It is extremely comfortable specially with fleece lining inside. The style is more on plain side. For style I like Retro X, but comfort of R4."

"Purchased this jacket for a trip to eastern Europe in the winter and it was wonderful! I was often able to use it alone - even with temps at or below freezing - or with a longer water-proof shell when it was rainy or snowing. The wind blocking was more effective than I expected and the weight was comfortable for layering.
Question for the designers: why did you put the small pocket on the shoulder instead on along the zipper line? It was often awkward to access/unzip + falls directly under the shoulder strap of any size pack, which means you can't really use it all of the time. May want to reconsider the location."

"I thought that I was purchasing another jacket for my husband but I must have entered a W instead. I opened my box & saw a Women's size medium. I was just going to send it back for a Men's medium or a Women's large. I tried the jacket on...WOW...I am keeping it. I have a long sleeved t shirt with a heavy sweater underneath my R4 jacket. The fit is amazing. It isn't too tight in the shoulders...I can move, yet it is fitted but not tight around my waist. My husband LOVES his (he has five different "r's".) I have several ski jackets, gloves, hats, gear from Patagonia, but this is my first R4. I can't wait to go outside in the snow, wind and rain...yes, all in one day. I will get back with a warmth factor, but as far as fit...this is SUPER."

"In addition to being an excellent backpacking layer, this jacket is, shall we say, classy enough for everyday wear. I'm in Colorado, where it doesn't generally get really cold (except in the mountains), so I effectively use the R4 as my winter jacket. My only gripe is the fit. I'm usually pretty dependably size M, but this jacket is much roomier than I expected (would like) it to be."

"I bought this jacket several years ago when I lived in the southeastern U.S. Last summer I moved to the northwest with more snow days. The jacket performs well with it's snuggly-ness, windproofing, and bungee cinch waist that ups the warmth. My main gripe is the fit. I usually wear M, and S in Patagonia's stuff. Got this in a M and found the waist/hips region created something of a muffin top effect, right above the hem while the hem stuck closer to my form. Also, the general silohette is not very flattering. Sleeves are also waay too long for everyday wear, but may be fine in the backcountry if worn over gloves. I returned the jacket and got the Leeway (Med.) from last fall. Not as warm, but a classic style silohette with non-membrane windproof."

"In the R2 (slim fit), the medium fits pretty perfectly. The medium in the R4 (reg fit) has *a LOT* of extra room. Unless I wore an extra thick sweater with it, it might be too drafty.
and... if only fleeces were dog hair proof... since my dogs just refuse to quit shedding ; P"

"Patagonia is tops! I put this jacket on and never took it off from the day I purchased it. Used it to help on the farm. play in the snow, gather wood and dressed it up to go out. Washed it day in and day out thru this past cold winter. the handle to the zipper broke off and with the cool spring I was reluctant to give it up. But I sent it back to Patagonia and my Faith in this Company is A#1. They sent me a new jacket. Sad that my old jacket is far away and working on new memories with this one. Thanks Patagonia!"

"I admired a friends R4 jacket and order one . Hers was about 2 years old. Mine arrived and I was very disappointed. It was not at all windproof and was not flattering at all. I agree with the review about the shoulder seams. I returned the jacket"

"This jacket made me look like the Humpback of Notre Dame. I have never experienced such a strange fit. I always wear a Medium, but had ordered a large so that I had extra room. But the waist was too small, the shoulders tight, and there was a big bubble of extra material in my upper back."

"I bought an R4 years ago that I love, then the style changed and made it very uncomfortable to wear. The change was the lack of shoulder seams, which makes the jacket bunch up under my arms and rub against my skin causing it to be irritated. Each year I check back at Patagonia to see if the new R4 comes in a version with shoulder seams and it hasn't happened yet. Please make one or make the old version available! (After years of wear and washing, my old version is no longer warm.) Patagonia is my favorite source for warm jackets and I get 2 jackets here every day (my current can't-live-without jacket is the micro-puff). I wear it all year round indoors and outdoors -- it is great!"

"I have owned 2 of the R4 Jackets. It is one of my daily favorites. The new cut of the jacket is not as form fitting as the previous R4 version. I prefer the form fitting cut, as it fits under garments with a cleaner line. Even with the change in cut, I still love this jacket."

"This jacket is great. I just got my second one in fall 2008 (my first one was a small men's r4). It is very warm and fits well (I wear a women's medium in Patagonia gear), and I use it from spring-winter here in Michigan. It gets cold here but the r4 is warm enough on its own and breathes well enough for the spring & fall. I had first bought the men's because I did not like the cut of the women's back in 2005 (too short and wide). That jacket got replaced (it developed a strange run in it) so I tried the women's medium. The fit of the women's is much better now; the fit is longer but still shaped for a woman's body, and perhaps a little lighter (?) and I love it. I am a big fan of Patagonia and the improvements are great. I do miss the little nubbly zipper tags, in the old model, that made for easy gripping when you have gloves on."
