R1 also perfect for the tropics
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"The R1 is a great product even for tropical and subtropical destinations. During the day, the R1 provides a thin layer of insulation when the clouds roll in and the salt spray begins to evaporate from your skin. The interior grid pattern provides enough air movement that you do not overheat, while the fit is perfect for layering over a Capilene 1 crew. The R1 will also serve you well at the end of a long day on the flats while you share fish stories at one of those open air watering holes in The Bahamas. I also use my R1 as moisture-wicking insulation while mountain biking in the temperate winters of North Carolina. Take it from me, you can be just as cold in the land of palm trees and turquoise water as you can in the northern boreal forest of Canada, and the R1 is something that can certainly help you be prepared. To add to my praises for the R1, this piece of technical gear really stands up well after being stuffed in a dry bag, covered with fish slime, and washed time and time again, even by hand while traveling. Well done, Patagonia."

Great 1/4 zip but pricey
4 out of 5 4 of 5 stars
"Pros, very light while keeping you warm and dry.

Cons, collar overlaps too much and bulges at top of zipper when fully zipped. Need to shrink the neck protective flap. It is also pricey for what you get. should be more 90-100 dollar range

5-7 135lbs bought Small. Fits perfect

Good Product
4 out of 5 4 of 5 stars
"Warm, sometimes a little too warm when I'm on the skin track, but dries quickly. Dries faster and wicks moisture away from the skin better than Capilene. Probably need another one.
Fit was a little looser than I expected, especially around the neck.

This is Patagonia
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"I wear the R1 year round. I have to say with all the items I have from Patagonia this is the item that I use the most. It is warm and lightweight and I love the long zipper length if I overheat. I will always wear this over a Cap 1 because the R1 would stick to my other Caps, it seems the Cap 1 and the R1 were made for each other. I am 6'5" 185 lbs and the L fits me the best."

Could Be Better
3 out of 5 3 of 5 stars
"I think chest pockets on light-weight base layers are a trend that needs to go. The seam tape on mine shows through and it looks like I am wearing a bra, or had open heart surgery. Not as clean as in the photos on their site. I would give this more stars if they got rid of the chest pocket. Could also be cut a bit tighter, since it's a baselayer."

Looks great

"Be sure to observe the shaded waffle pattern on this fine garment by zooming in on the product image. Really nice! I ordered one size smaller than I usually do and the sleeve length was still perfect. Soft and stretchy to the max!"

Great As A Layer or Alone
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"Great for layering or by itself. Surprisingly warm yet breathable. Looks great, well made and very functional...I own two of these and will probably buy more. They work particularly well under a micropuff vest.

If I could do anything different I'd add a bit of length to the sleeves...not a deal breaker.

Most versatile layer I own (and now I have 4)
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"You can wear this fleece in just about any weather, except the hottest. It breathes, it insulates, it keeps you warm and comfortable all day. If you had to pick one mid layer fleece this is the one. Pair it up with a capilene shirt as a base and you are ready to rock just about anywhere."

Obssessive
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"When I find something that looks good and fits great, i tend to buy a few. I have four of these in different colors. Now wishing i had the black. Warm and comfortable. Spent a snowy day in -8 degree weather installing windows for a remodel project. I had a capeline 3, two of these and and a light Marmot fleece over top (to keep my R1s clean and sawdust free). I was warm all day. These also look great around town, I wear them to work all the time."

Another hit

"Beside its advertised warmth and breathability, I noticed that my R1 blocks light wind efficiently, which I really appreciate after kitesurfing sessions on windy summer afternoons."

"I use this pullover (have a couple now) constantly Spring, Winter, and Fall. Looks cool enough to wear casually. Excellent layer as both a base and second layer over some Capilene."

Great piece
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"I just got two of these (one in Small and one in Medium) and I love them both. I am right in between the suggested sizes so I figured I would try them both. The small is great as a baselayer and kept me warm on a cool run and tried exceptionally fast. The medium is more suited for layering and I have worn it lounging around multiple times because of its warmth and comfort. I can't wait to take these out camping/hiking because so far they have been awesome, plain and simple."

Great top, annoying sizing
3 out of 5 3 of 5 stars
"I have many, many R1 flash pullovers. I love them all, but it's very frustrating that Patagonia changes the sizing on these every couple years - generally trending towards a more slimmer fit. I recommend not buying this online - try it on in the store first."

Perfect piece
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"As a base-layer in the winter, to throwing on after a wet cyclocross race, to keeping me warm on the sidelines of my daughter's soccer games, this piece is perfect. It is amazingly versatile: breathes well, dries quickly, warm, perfect fit, as a top layer or base layer."

"I have 3 thats how good this piece is. The only problem that I have is that they run bigger then they use too. I wear them everyday, all the time, very comfortable. A Must have."

Excellent piece, strange sizing
4 out of 5 4 of 5 stars
"My history: ten years of sport and trad rock climbing, some alpine, ice, and mixed experience, strong backcountry/ski mountaineering background, significant lightweight backpacking/hiking, some surfing, lots of yoga. I've sewed packs, windshirts, pants, and am very critical of gear. 6'3", 192 to 175 pounds over the last five years, +6 ape index.

I bought the R1 flash for a quick hike of the John Muir Trail. I wanted a very light, very warm baselayer to wear over skin on my legs and over a silkweight capilene on my torso, being as light and breathable while still giving a lot of insulation. I expected it to be heavier than my old capilene2-equivalent baselayer.

I bought the pullover in Large initially - it fit like a flag. I returned it and found a Medium, a huge shock as I've worn Large for a long time, though I am lighter than I used to be.

I have now used the pullover for ten days of a John Muir Trail hike in late summer, in temperatures down to about 25 degrees; low humidity, high exertion, and nontechnical and nonabrasive terrain. I will be using it for all my hiking and climbing in the future.

The Medium fit is snug, the way I like it. It fits like a baselayer, the long neck zipper make it easy to don and doff, the high collar is very welcome during chilly nights. The chest zipper pocket is useful and not out of place, though I usually prefer as few features as possible. Such pockets are tough to use, as my gloves or hat in the pocket make me feel like I've grown a bust, so I always put them in my pack, rendering the pocket useless. Nonetheless, the pocket is reasonable.

The weight is EXCELLENT. 12 oz (measured on a postal scale) in Medium, for a very warm, very versatile piece. This is only two ounces heavier than my old, thin baselayer. The weight blew me away, for years I refused to wear fleece of any kind, feeling that a lighter baselayer and heavier puffy jacket was more efficient. The R1 changed my view, it's as light as a 'normal' baselayer and three times as warm.

The fabric is excellent, really wonderful. It's a bit bulky and doesn't slide over other layers, but that's true of any sort of polyester fleece. The stretch is enough that even with a tight fit the piece is never contrictive or annoying. Very, very warm and extremely light, it's wonderful stuff, nothing like 100 weight fleece. The raised grid design works as intended, and works very, very well.

The fit is screwy. The Large pullover was huge, way too big on me. The Medium is a bit too tight. I have a short torso, big shoulders, and very long arms (typical climber build), and the torso could be longer and the arms need another inch in the sleeves. The pullover doesn't meet light gloves in a climbing position. This is OK as it's a light pullover/baselayer and I can make it work, but another inch in the sleeves would be useful. If I could get my hands on the R1 material I would sew sleeve extensions. The fit perplexes me as Patagonia markets to lanky outdoor athletes; the trend toward fitting a desk-jockey physique seems counterintuitive.

5/5 for quality, fabric, function.
3/5 for fit.

I love this pullover and will be using for a long, long time to come. If the fit issue were worked out I would have absolutely nothing but accolades.

All around goodness
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"What a great layer! Lightweight, compact, warm and versatile. Can be used instead of a sweatshirt in cool climates working out, as your warmy over a shirt for casual affairs or a layer among many to fend off brutal cold. I alternated this layer with the r-1 hoody as a layer while on a 3 week outdoor trip in the Desert south of Salt lake city. Great to throw on first thing to fend off the cold while brewing your coffee in the mornings! Don't leave home without it!"
