"Like the big pockets and breathability. Not tested in torrential rain yet, but kept me warm and dry in intermittent showers."

2009 SST
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"The 2009 SST is an absolutely stellar product.

We've set all-time rainfall records this summer, and I've been outside in a lot of it. I've been bone dry in the new SST.

The lightweight fabric has just the right ratio of weight to durability. I love the color (Sage Khaki), which allows me to blend with my surroundings.

It took me a while to get used to the lack of a drawcord at the waist, but I'm now a convert. The welded seam does not hold any water when I wade deep, and I like the clean-cut appearance of the jacket. No issues with wind or rain coming up from the bottom of the jacket.

The lack of fleece-lined handwarmer pocket is criticism of the jacket by some. You can still stick your hands in the two side pockets for protection from the elements.

Too, I figure if my hands are in my pockets, I'm not fishin'--which is what I came to do.

good replacement
4 out of 5 4 of 5 stars
"This SST was a replacement for my old trusty SST when the zipper blew out. The new fabric is super breathable and super light. The new hood design is far superior to the old one. The new waterproof zipper is actually waterproof, the old style would always leak when I was rowing. This one has not. I did not give it 5 stars for two reasons, there is no drawcord in the hem, and the lack of fleece in the handwarmer pockets. Overall the new SST is great, the light weight, redesigned hood, and a main zipper that is actually waterproof make it a fantastic jacket to fish and guide out of."

"Very nice jacket. extremely light and with just the right amount of storage. No sinch cord on the waist but seems to stay anyways."

Very Good Fishing Jacket
4 out of 5 4 of 5 stars
"I just spent three days in cold, horizontally blowing rain, and I pretty much did not take this jacket off the entire time. It performed beautifully. The material is great, there are enough pockets to hold the basics (gloves, fly boxes etc.) but not overkill. I only wish that there was a drawstring for the waist."

I'm not a fisherman!
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"True. When I bought my my trusty old SST 16 years ago, I was attracted to it for its utility and function. After 16 years of constant use, I sent my SST to Patagonia for repairs to the Stay-dry sleeves. I was surprised when a new SST replacement arrived in the mail. Patagonia noticed some other things going wrong with my old SST and sent a replacement instead. Awesome customer service! Some differences in the new SST: It is so much lighter in weight while retaining water resistance and wind blocking capabilities. Nice. I wonder if this SST will last as long but I have to remind myself that heavier is not necessarily stronger. The fit around my face and neck is improved, especially with the hood up and zipper fully closed. Comfortable. The side zippers add more storage access from the outside of the shell as well as some ventilation. The chest pockets seem to be positioned a little higher and are a touch narrower. The major negative is that the bottom hem can no longer be adjusted for tightness. The cinch cord adjustment is no longer there! What gives? No drafts up my back yet but we'll see what happens. The bottomline is that the SST still does what I want and I appreciate the improvements (except for the loss of the waist adjustment!). The design, function and quality justify the cost to me."

The only wading jacket

"I’ve used several generations of the SST over the last 15 years. You guys continue to do a great job upgrading this Jacket. In my opinion, the biggest upgrade is the fabric. There is not a better breathable waterproof layer than nylon rip stop. Nothing else seems to keep you as dry as this. The only 2 things I’m confused about are why you eliminated the drawstring at the hem and the fleece lined pockets? It would also be nice to see a couple of different color choices. Over all though, there is no better jacket on the market!"

Workhorse fisher
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"This is a great jacket for the NW steelhead fishing. A tough coat. Improved design from the same version i had purchased a few years ago, makes the jacket stand strong. The pocket in the back is great for wool gloves, a sandwich or a tallboy. The fleecy collar makes it better on the cold days, and makes it a bit more presentable for around town. The large breast pockets are awesome. They provide a bit more bells and whistles than its predecessor to stow line clippers, fly boxes and leaders so you can essentially fish out of the jacket - no vest needed. Well worth the purchase for any hearty fisherman who braves the wet weather on the west end."

A fly fishing masterpiece for all!
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"I have grown to expect this kind of quality out of Patagonia products. But its the garmets made for the sports closest to me that show Patagonias true insight into the technical features I need. As the leaves fell in Alaska and the cold rain turned to snow the SST jacket let me concentrate on my fishing. All of the features from the attachment points to the total storm proof protection were just great. I also liked the dry pocket inside. This gives you the option of keeping your wallet handy for a cup of coffee or a tip for your guide. If your a die hard steelhead fisherman or a guy or girl who can never call it a day this jacket is for you. You can expect to keep fishing in the worst of it. This jacket is a must have for anyone in the market for the best!"

safety feature
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"This is an amazing jacket for the salmon and steelhead fisherman, but I believe I reallized an important feature that would benefit many individuals. Salmon and Steelhead fisherman are often out on the streams during hunting season and some orange striping or marking both the hood and upper portion of the jacket would add to the safety and I do not believe that these fish will be spooked by the bright colors.
just my 2 cents

In Demand
5 out of 5 5 of 5 stars
"Bought it to go fishing up in Bristol Bay, AL and loved it. However, one of the guides up there complained that his older jacket was terrible and for five days this guide hounded me for my jacket. We had stellar fishing and weather so never got to put the jacket through its paces. In light of the unbeleivable experience I had up in the Wood-Tikchik area and the remoteness of our lodge. I wound up giving it to the guide who is certainly outfitted in the nicest fishing jacket made. The jacket is pricey but the smile on the guides face and the overall AL wilderness experience made my decision to give it to him that much easier. He has since emailed me and been delighted with the performance of the SST. A ringing endorsement from a guide who works in remote AL in the toughest of conditions. Where equipment failures can lead to long cold wet days and nights. A jacket tough enough for the AL wilds is what the SST delivers.
I will be ordering another soon.

Tough & Functional
4 out of 5 4 of 5 stars
"I have the older model of this jacket and am still wearing it after three seasons of guiding in Alaska. The handwarmer pockets are plush, the zipper is bombproof, and the fit is excellent. The cuffs will keep water out 90% of the time when tight. The back pocket is great for storing maps, extra gear, or any other larger item that you don't need often."
